Author: Burn Here's my review: You might not remember but there was once a laptop with a roller mouse--very similar to this one--built in. The laptop was called the Outbound and I used one for years. The laptop itself was fair, but I can't tell you how much I liked the mouse on that machine! It remains my favorite mouse by far. Especially for laptops, it makes trackpads and pointing sticks seem problematic, quarky, slow and inaccurate. I even used it while commuting by train ride. It was stable even under the shaky conditions because your arms and hands are in close, and in a low energy position.
When the roller mouse came out as an accessory, I immediately went out and bought the Roller Mouse "Pro" version, and I love it. But it is a little bulky for laptop use if you are traveling--which I do a lot of. So I recently went and bought this "Free" version and it's great! The next best thing to having it be built in to the machine.
I can guarantee you that I am buying the first laptop that re-introduces this as a built in feature. Until then, I will be using nothing but this trackbar.
One review I read online said, "If they turned out a keyboard version where the bar was at the top of the keyboard (with no F-key row) it might justify the high price tag." Clearly this reviewer does not understand computer ergonomics and did not use the mouse long enough to know that having the bar at the top would be ergonomically ridiculous. Having the roller on the top would be like having your space bar on the top. You would be constantly having to slide your hands up raising the lower parts of your palms over the keyboard. I don't see how this would be natural or comfortable for anyone.
You'll see, having the roller as close to the spacebar as possible is the way you want to go. Once you get use to it, you'll be amazed at how little you have to move your hands away from the keyboard and how fast and accurate the device is for pointing and doing graphic work. I wish laptops didn't come with a trackpad below the keys so I could get the roller closer to the space bar.
In any case, this roller bar has superior performance AND better ergonomics... ...I truly hope I get chance to shake the hands of the designers of this mouse someday.
